Pre-Service Training Format

The CASA pre-service training course includes 8 classes plus a post-training follow-up class, each requiring pre-work activities to be completed beforehand. The pre-work varies weekly and may involve tasks such as reading, watching videos, researching information, completing online activities, or submitting short assignments.

The following topics are covered in addition to case studies integrated throughout the training cycle:

  • The Role of a CASA Volunteer

  • Roles in the Case and the Court Process/Timeline

  • The Development of Child Abuse and Neglect Laws

  • Child Development, Attachment, and Minimum Sufficient Level of Care

  • Understanding and Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect

  • Strengths-Based Advocacy

  • Trauma and Resilience

  • Interviewing Techniques for Families and Children

  • Mental Illness and Substance Abuse

  • Poverty vs. Neglect

  • Confidentiality and Effective Communication

  • Culture, Diversity, and Disproportionality

  • Domestic Violence

  • Educational Advocacy

  • Advocating for Older Youth

  • Advocating for LGBTQ Youth

  • Writing Your CASA Court Report

Courtroom Observation

In addition to the training class, our program requires trainees to attend at least two courtroom observations. Trainees will receive a court docket and will be able to choose which two cases to observe. The cases are spread throughout the district and one of our advocate managers will attend with you as well as the CASA volunteer who is assigned to the case. Being in court is hands-on experience that will allow you to familiarize yourself with the courtroom culture and norms, judge's expectations, role of the CASA and GAL, and best practices for effective advocacy for your CASA child.
